Top 5 Baby Items I Actually Use Every Day as a New Mum

When my first baby arrived, I thought I’d need all the usual stuff — a fancy change mat, a nursing chair, endless toys… but honestly? I barely used any of it.

Through three babies, I’ve learned which items actually make daily life easier and get used every single day. Here’s my short list of essentials that you’ll actually reach for — no clutter, no stress.

1. Sensory Bottles / Discovery Jars

You don’t need lots of toys for a newborn, but babies love gentle movement and colour.

Sensory bottles are usually baby-safe bottles filled with things like water, oil, glitter, or small colourful objects. When the bottle moves, everything slowly floats around inside.

I’d place one near my baby during tummy time or gently roll it so they could watch it move. It’s such a simple thing, but babies find it fascinating.

2. Baby carrier

Newborns love being close to you.

A baby carrier lets you keep your baby snug against you while still having your hands free to do things around the house. Whether it was making something quick to eat, tidying up a little, or looking after my other kids, it made everyday life much easier.

Some days it was also the only way my baby would settle or nap. The warmth, movement, and being close to you can be really comforting for newborns. For me, it became one of those things I reached for almost every day during the early months.

3. Grab basket / baby station

Such a simple thing, but it made newborn life much easier.

Before having kids, I thought I’d be using the change table in the nursery all the time.

In reality, the baby is wherever you are.

I started keeping small baby stations around the house — just a basket with nappies, wipes, a spare onesie, and a muslin cloth. It meant I always had what I needed nearby without running across the house.

4. Soft Textured Fabric Squares / Sensory Cloths

Newborns explore the world through touch.

Simple squares with different textures — like muslin, cotton, ribbed fabric, or fleece — can be really interesting for little hands.

I’d place one near my baby during tummy time so they could feel it or try to grab it.

5. Soft, Multi-Purpose Floor Play Mat

Babies spend so much time on the floor — rolling, kicking, tummy time.

Having a soft, generously sized mat was a lifesaver for us.

A soft play mat quickly becomes one of the most used things in the newborn stage.

It gives your baby a comfortable place on the floor for tummy time, stretching, kicking, and early play.
